NASA discussed its ambitious asteroid redirect mission from AIAA’s 2013 SPACE Conference and Exposition in San Diego, CA, Wednesday, 11 September. NASA plans to capture an asteroid as it tumbles past Earth and drag it into orbit around the moon. Then, once the space rock has moved into lunar orbit, the agency would like to send a pair of astronauts to collect samples from it. At the conference, Paul Chodas of the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office said, “We have two to three [target asteroids] which we will characterize in the next year and if all goes well... those will be valid candidates that could be certified targets.” (Image Credit: AIAA)
