In an op-ed for Space News titled “Ransoming Our Future,” AIAA Executive Director, and former astronaut, Sandra Magnus writes that because the Federal government has shown itself unwilling to compromise, the future of the aerospace industry and the U.S. is being “held for ransom.” Magnus details how small aerospace businesses are especially impacted when the government fails to pass budgets, because they receive a significant percentage of DOD and NASA contracts and subcontracts. Magnus states that America needs “principled, well-thought-out and sustained budgeting” with a “long-term strategic focus.” She concludes by noting these issues will be addressed at the upcoming AIAA Science & Technology Forum in January 2014.
