Despite losing some time during the government shutdown, the Maven spacecraft is progressing towards its planned 18 November launch. It is important that the spacecraft not miss its launch window, or launch too late inside it; otherwise, it could have a shorter lifespan which would negatively impact its mission as a data relay. The Maven mission is a significant step toward unraveling the planetary puzzle about Mars’ past and present environments. Meanwhile, India is also launching its own Mars spacecraft next month, called the Mars Orbiter Mission. (Image: Artist's concept shows the MAVEN spacecraft in orbit around the Red Planet.
