    This webinar introduces the technologies, fundamental concepts, and trade-offs involved in the design and analysis of electrical systems for More-/Hybrid-/All-Electric Aircraft, for which improvements to reliability, cost, performance, environmental impact, and significant mission fuel burn reductions have been theorized and/or demonstrated. It targets aerospace industry engineers who may lack significant expertise with aircraft electrical systems.

    Material is presented at an introductory level and is accessible to those without a deep electrical engineering background, although a working knowledge of electromechanics and physics is assumed. Topics covered may include: current trends in More-/Hybrid-/All-Electric Aircraft; electromechanical energy conversion; enabling power electronics (devices, circuits, design); trends in MW-scale machines and drives; power distribution and protection systems; thermal management; modeling and simulation of large integrated systems; and general More-/Hybrid-/All-Electric propulsion design considerations. The topics are modular and the emphasis given to individual topics can be tuned to match the interest of the attendees.

    • Understand the fundamentals of electromechanical energy conversion
    • Be familiar with enabling power electronics and trends in MW-scale machines and drives

    Tim O’Connell (Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering, U. of Illinois, 2008) is a Senior Lead Engineer with P.C. Krause & Associates in West Lafayette, IN. Since 2009, he has worked closely with the U.S. Air Force and industry on More Electric Aircraft technology and architecture design, analysis, simulation, and test.
