    Course Overview

Space Environment and Its Effects on Space Systems

    Synopsis:

This course on the space environment and its effects on systems is intended to serve two audiences. Firstly, those relatively new to the design, development and operation of spacecraft systems. Secondly, those experts in fields other than the space environment who wish to obtain a basic knowledge of the topic. The topics and their depth are adequate for the reader to address the environmental effects on spacecraft instruments or systems to at least the conceptual design level. Topics covered include spacecraft failures, solar system overview, Earth’s magnetic and electric fields, Earth’s neutral environment, Earth’s plasma environment, Radiation interactions, Contamination, and Meteorites and orbital debris.

    Key Topics:

    • Typical spacecraft failures with failure and risk analyses
    • Overview of the solar system
    • Near Earth environment (gravitational and magnetic fields and magnetosphere)
    • Interactions of plasma and neutral constituents
    • Radiation interactions with electronics and humans
    • Contamination, meteoroids and orbital debris

    Who Should Attend:

This course is intended to serve two audiences. Firstly, those new to the design, development and operation of spacecraft systems. Secondly, experts in fields other than the space environment who wish to obtain a basic knowledge of the topic. Thus it should be of interest to all who develop space systems.
