    Opening Plenary Session: Red Bull Stratos Project

    Joe Kittinger and Art Thompson, from The Red Bull Stratos team, will discuss their experiences with the Red Bull Stratos Project, in particular involving Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking jump from the stratosphere, thereby becoming the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall.


    Joe Kittinger made history on August 16, 1960 as he ascended to 102,800 feet in a high-altitude balloon and jumped to Earth, setting four world records. He shared his knowledge with Baumgartner to help address the challenges of the Red Bull Stratos Project, and as “Capcom” (capsule communicator) he was the primary point of radio contact with Baumgartner during his ascent.

    As technical project director, Art Thompson assembled the mission’s team, and today he drives key areas of technical development such as capsule creation and chamber tests.
