Accreditation

ABET, Inc. is the official accrediting body for institutions offering engineering and technology degree programs in 23 nations, including the United States. AIAA is the lead society working with ABET in evaluating institutions that offer degrees in aeronautics, astronautics, aerospace, and similarly named programs.

During an ABET evaluation, AIAA members who have been trained and approved, visit the institution together with team members from other societies. They review coursework taught and labs offered, interview students and faculty, and review other materials. They then confer with the other members of the team, and the group offers recommendations to ABET about the institution.

ABET follows up with the institution to address comments made by the team and then determines whether the institution should be accredited.

Schools that are accredited can be searched on the ABET website, by degree, state, region, or a combination thereof.

If you are interested in becoming an ABET evaluator for aero/astro programs, please contact Stephen Brock at AIAA, or complete an application on the ABET website.
