"Delivering NextGen: Progress and Challenges Ahead"

0900 - 0930 Networking Break

0930 - 1130 System Design Implications for Advance Vehicles in NextGen Ballroom G
Chair: Harry N. Swenson, NASA Ames Research Center

Panelists: Fred Wieland, Sensis, Ed Stevens, Raytheon

This panel will address the emerging issues associated with the development of new and advance vehicles that will operate in the Air Transportation System of the future known as NextGen. A long recognized problem in the development of new and advance vehicles is that in order for their operation to "fit" within the air transportation system many if not all of the design advantages afforded are often reduced or eliminated. As the Federal Aviation Administration and the nation embark on the decades long the transformation of the Air Transportation System into NextGen a similar transformation needs to be accomplished in the design of new vehicles to operate within NextGen. These new design processes need to explore not only the advantages of new vehicle but also how they will actually operate within the system, including interaction with legacy vehicles as well as their environmental and safety impact. NASA is sponsoring two innovative studies that utilize advance modeling and simulation methods to explore the potential impacts on NextGen of seven classes of advanced air vehicles including: very light jets, super heavy transports, uncrewed aerial systems, supersonic transports, cruise efficient short takeoff and landing aircraft, rotorcraft, and supersonic business class aircraft. The panel will discuss many of the advances and challenges associated with the multi-faceted design processes that have been utilized in these studies.
