Will Your Achievements Take You to Aerospace’s Most Prestigious Ranks?
As your experience and contributions to the profession increase, you will become eligible to apply or be nominated to upgrade your AIAA membership status to Senior Member, Associate Fellow, Fellow, or Honorary Fellow. The distinction you gain with each membership upgrade earns the respect of your peers and employer – and bolsters your reputation throughout the industry.

Following in Orville Wright’s Footsteps
In 1933, Orville Wright became AIAA’s first Honorary Fellow, our highest membership grade. Today, our Honorary Fellows and Fellows are the most respected names in the aerospace industry.

Individuals who have acquired a professional standing in the practice of the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics.



Student Upgrade

Any student who is a member of AIAA in good standing at the time of graduation will automatically receive one free year of professional membership and a second year at half price.
senior member
Individuals who have demonstrated a successful professional practice in the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics for the equivalent of at least eight years … or who have at least eight years of continuous professional membership in AIAA. The Membership Committee reviews applications and nominations each month.

associate fellow
Individuals who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work … or have done original work of outstanding merit … or have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. Nominees must be Senior Members with at least 12 years of professional experience (four years of post-graduate studies may be included, if applicable). Three AIAA member references with the standing of Associate Fellow, Fellow, or Honorary Fellow are required. Nomination forms are due by 15 April; references are due by 15 May. Newly elected Associate Fellows receive a certificate and lapel pin and are honored at the Associate Fellows Dinner held in conjunction with the Aerospace Science Conference each January.

Individuals of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics who have made notable valuable contributions to the aerospace arts, sciences, or technologies. Nominees must be Associate Fellows. Five AIAA member references (of specific AIAA member grades) are required. Nomination forms are due by 15 June; references are due by 15 July. Newly elected Fellows receive a certificate and lapel pin and are honored at the Aerospace Spotlight Gala.

Individuals of eminence in aeronautics or astronautics distinguished by long and highly contributive careers in the aerospace arts, sciences, or technologies. Nominees must be Fellows. Five AIAA member references are required. Nomination forms are due by 15 June; references are due by 15 July. Newly elected Honorary Fellows receive a certificate and lapel pin and are honored at the Aerospace Spotlight Gala.
