Guiding the Course of AIAA Activities

Drawing on the vast expertise of our membership, AIAA Standing Committees help the Institute achieve its multi-faceted mission and guide its course into the future. Serving a variety of objectives, the Standing Committees support our members' needs … recognize their achievements … organize career-enhancing activities … give them a voice in public policy … foster productive interactions with their peers … and help them advance technically and professionally.

Guidelines
A description of the scope and staff contact for each of AIAA's Committees follows. Note: All committees do not accept nominations. In some cases, the Board of Directors may only appoint members. Committee appointments begin in May each year.

In general, appointments are for a one (1) year term and are renewable each year. Each committee meets two or three times per year, usually in conjunction with AIAA's technical conferences.

You may nominate yourself or someone else for membership. Membership is not limited to only one committee at a time. Please note that it is not necessary to send in a nomination form for someone already serving on an AIAA committee.

Nominees for any committee must possess good interpersonal skills and have an interest in making contributions to their professional society as well as a desire to work in a team environment to achieve the committee's goals. Support by the nominee's employer for travel and time to devote to committee business is a must. The endorsement from the nominee's department head indicating that support is available should be completed on the nomination form. Lastly, all committee members must be AIAA members in good standing or join AIAA upon appointment to a committee.

Nominees will be notified as soon as possible as to their selection for committee membership. Nominees who are not selected for committee membership during the current year will automatically be considered for membership the following year.
