Passport to the Future Educator Workshop 2009 3 – 4 August Sponsored by  This workshop takes place 3- 4 August 2009, in conjunction with IECEC and JPC. Join presenters from the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), AIAA, NASA and others to learn about new curriculum, activities and resources, and how to map them to your state standards. You will come away with best practices to engage and excite students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Kenneth Huff, one of the 2009 AIAA Foundation Educator Achievement Award winners will also be honored during the workshop. If you are interested in the “technical” aspects of aerospace education, this is the workshop for you. Networking opportunities with aerospace professional will help you bring real world applications into the classroom. This is a great opportunity for a spouse, family member or fried to learn about the industry while you attend the Conference. For More information, click HERE 2009 Regional Leadership Conference 6-7 August The 2009 Regional Leadership Conference will be held 6-7 August 2009, following IECEC and JPC. The 2009 Regional Leadership Conference (RLC) is an opportunity to introduce new Section Officers and Deputy Directors to the Institute's resources and programs. In addition, it will provide Sections and Regions with information on upcoming events and new activities to increase Member motivation and encourage Member participation. The conference is open to all Section Officers and Deputy Directors: those experienced officers, as well as new recruits. The skills introduced at the RLC will make your role as an AIAA Section Officer or Deputy Director a more rewarding experience and will give you the opportunity to leave a lasting impression on all areas of your professional and personal development! At this conference, you will obtain the tools and resources needed to be an effective and efficient leader in your Section and Region. Professional Development Program 6 – 7 August The AIAA Professional Development Department will be offering five short courses in conjunction with this meeting. They will be held 6-7 August 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Colorado the two days following IECEC and JPC. Registration for a short course includes FREE admittance to the IECEC and JPC technical sessions and exhibits, excluding the receptions, lunches, proceedings or papers, and other specific conference-related functions. Professional Development Courses Pressure Hardware Analysis and Testing Verification Guide Instructor: John Chang Pressure vessels (PVs) are some of the most critical components used in space systems from a safety and mission reliability point of view. Before 1998, all space flight PVs were designed, analyzed, and qualified per MIL-STD-1522A. In 1995, industry started to develop standards to replace 1522A. In 1998, AIAA S-080, which establishes the requirements for metallic PVs, was published. A sister standard, AIAA S-081, which sets forth requirements for composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs), was released. However, S-080 and S-081 and ISO 14623 only specify, “what-to-do,” not “how-to-do.” This short course provides guidance for the implementation of these standards. Important inclusions are leak-before-burst demonstrations for metallic pressure vessels and metallic liners for COPVs, impact damage tolerance test procedures for COPVs, general vibration tests for pressure vessels, and qualification by similarity conditions. Hybrid Rocket Propulsion Sponsored by the AIAA Hybrid Rocket Propulsion Technical Committee The “Hybrid Rocket Propulsion” short course is quintessential for all professionals specializing in chemical propulsion. The mechanisms associated with hybrid combustion and propulsion are diverse and affect our abilities to successfully advance and sustain the development of hybrid technology. It is our penultimate goal to promote the science of hybrid rocketry which is safe enough to be used in academia and the private sector. A historical demonstration of hybrid rocket capability is the 2004 X-prize winner SpaceShipOne. This course reviews the fundamentals of hybrid rocket propulsion with special emphasis on application-based design and system integration, propellant selection, flow field and regression rate modeling, solid fuel pyrolysis, scaling effects, transient behavior, and combustion instability. Electric Propulsion Sponsored by the AIAA Electronic Propulsion Committee Over 120 spacecraft presently use electric thruster systems for primary or auxiliary propulsion. Electric thrusters are now being used to provide most of the post-LEO propulsion demands for both geosynchronous and deep space missions. The availability of practical, high-specific-impulse electric thrusters with long life, and the development of electrical power-systems required to sustain them, has resulted in extremely rapid growth in the applications of this technology. This course describes the fundamental operating principles, performance characteristics and design features of state-of-the-art systems in each of the three classes of electric thrusters (electrothermal, electromagnetic and electrostatic). The impacts of the thruster performance and life on mission planning; mission analysis techniques; and on-board spacecraft systems will be addressed. The extension of spacecraft capabilities afforded by electric propulsion and issues associated with its integration into spacecraft will also be discussed. Air Breathing Propulsion Design Sponsored by the AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee This course is designed to give an overview of air breathing propulsion design topics: fundamentals of gas turbine engines, inlets and exhaust systems, engine performance, engine aircraft integration and power plant systems, and ramjets and scramjets. This course emphasizes the conveyance of a basic understanding of the subject topics to the student. The course was developed with the support and sponsorship of the AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee. Fundamentals of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) for Commercial/Civil Space Activities Instructor: John Ordway The ITAR has a significant impact on most involved in the commercial/civil space industry, including U.S. and certain foreign satellite operators, satellite manufacturers, consultants, and insurers. An understanding of the ITAR can make the ITAR manageable. This one-day course will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of the ITAR for those whom the ITAR affects, but who do not work with ITAR compliance on a daily basis. Engineers, program managers, scientists, salespersons, contract managers, attorneys, and executives will all benefit from this course. Course Materials Course notes will not be distributed onsite. AIAA and your course instructor highly recommend that you bring your computer with the course notes already downloaded to the course. Once you have registered for the course, these course notes are available about two weeks prior to the course event, and are available to you in perpetuity.
