NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Established in the 1930s, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology. America’s first satellite, Explorer 1, was created at JPL. Projects include the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers, the Cassini and Voyager missions, CloudSat, Spitzer Space Telescope, Galaxy Evolution Explorer, and Keck Telescope, with a total of 17 spacecraft and six instruments used across the solar system. JPL also conducts a number of space technology demonstrations in support of national security and develops technologies for use in fields from public safety to medicine. 
U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center The U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, is the U.S. Air Force’s center of acquisition excellence for acquiring and developing military space systems, including GPS, military satellite communications, defense meteorological satellites, space launch and range systems, satellite control networks, space based infrared systems, intercontinental ballistic missile systems, and space situational awareness capabilities. SMC manages more than $60 billion in contracts, has an annual operating budget of $7.8 billion, and employs more than 6,800 people worldwide.
