Building and Retaining the Aerospace Workforce
The 2009 Inside Aerospace forum will bring together leaders from the United States and abroad for a candid discussion building on the aerospace workforce development recommendations from Inside Aerospace 2008. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has partnered with the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), the Aerospace Department Chairs Association (ADCA), the Air Force Association (AFA), and SAE International to maintain focus on the aerospace workforce, taking into account industry, academic, and government perspectives. Our theme of Building and Retaining the Aerospace Workforce encompasses two overarching topics: - Preparation and Motivation: Pre-career development activities must be supported to ensure the availability of a skilled pool of fresh talent with the background necessary to succeed in the aerospace industry.
- Professional Development: The needs of those already in the aerospace workforce must be addressed, to retain skilled professionals and evolve their capabilities as technology progresses.
The forum will bring in viewpoints of educators, industry, aerospace professionals, government representatives, and non-government organizations. On the first day, the forum will address pre-career workforce development, and on the second day, strategies for workforce retention will be considered. The forum sessions will cover the following topics: Day 1: Inspiring and Capturing Members of the Workforce - Rebuilding the Nation's Image of Aerospace Contributions to Society
- Engaging with Future Generations in K12
- Engaging Within the University
- Focus on Diversity - Tapping a Virtually Untouched Resource Pool
Day 2: Workforce Retention and Professional Development - Stimulating and Nurturing a Passion for Aerospace Within the Workforce
- Recognition
- Work Environment
- Mentoring for Retention
A final session each day will combine views, suggestions, and observations from the day's panel discussions and provide specific recommendations, as well as proposed milestones to realize those recommendations. Following the forum, AIAA will produce an executive summary of these assessments and suggest strategies to track progress against the proposed milestones. Attendance at this event is open to all interested parties with directed invitations to key decision makers from government, industry, academia, and applicable non-government organizations. Special events held in conjunction with the forum include the AIAA Fellows Dinner and the AIAA Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala. Inside Aerospace is organized by AIAA and co-sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), the Aerospace Department Chairs Association (ADCA), the Air Force Association (AFA), and SAE International. It is supported by the AIAA Public Policy, Education Activities, International Activities, Corporate Member, and Technical Activities committees.
