With the second decade of the 21st century upon us, our nation seeks to protect and preserve freedom throughout the world. We also look beyond our earthly boundaries and are driven to explore, explain, and expand our knowledge of this amazing universe.
Imagine discovering an Earth-like planet (strong evidence that we are not alone), or the excitement of colonizing the Moon, with Mars in our sights! – And developing the critical technologies to realize those dreams.
Consider the emerging imperative to Innovate more affordable ways to send spacecraft around the Earth and to distant planets, returning important data to the civil, academic, and defense communities.
And think of the exciting opportunities to Collaborate with leaders in government and industry to build robust future space systems that facilitate progress and prosperity.
To realize these visions, we must overcome tremendous challenges. The AIAA SPACE 2010 Conference & Exposition provides the global aerospace industry with a forum to explore solutions for the advancement of humankind in areas ranging from national security to commercial development to space exploration.
Scientists, engineers, researchers, academic leaders, and key government and industry decision makers from all elements of the space community will find this annual conference to be a useful complement to their normal business and academic pursuits.
This year’s discussions will focus in particular on:
- NewSpace: A new breed of entrepreneurial space companies is joining the established commercial space community. What are the strategies and approaches of these “NewSpace” or “alt.space” companies? How do they interact with other companies, space agencies and governments?
- National Security Space: What are the newest developments in advanced concepts of operations, material and architectural solutions, enterprise architecture analysis, multi-stakeholder collaborations (cross-government, cross-commercial, and international), and space acquisition trends?
- Space Robotics: Gain insight into the latest technical advances in orbital and planetary surface applications and space architectures, especially systems supporting robotic construction techniques.
- Space Colonization: With key decisions looming on exploration missions to the Moon and beyond, we face unique challenges in making the space program relevant while captivating the imagination of the next generation. How do we convey goals such as learning from our past, improving life on Earth, and shaping our future through scientific scrutiny, exploration, and sound judgment, planning, and management?
Other areas to be discussed at the conference include space history, medicine, law and policy, logistics, operations, remote sensing systems and sensors, transportation and launch systems, systems engineering and space economics, and commodities for human sustainment using resources available on planetary bodies.
This year, to further enhance the opportunities for wide-ranging collaboration and the interchange of ideas and innovations, the AIAA SPACE 2010 Conference will be co-located with the 28th AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC-2010). Broadband for All
On-demand movies to the home, video conferencing in lieu of travel, and remote surveillance data from UAVs all demand greater bandwidth and global coverage. The AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC-2010), now in its 28th year, will explore the state of the art and potential solutions to the explosive demand for bandwidth and the need to provide broadband services in areas previously deemed economically or technically unfeasible.

The AIAA ICSSC Colloquium will focus on military satellite communications capabilities and dual-use satellites for meeting the needs of our armed forces around the globe. The program will explore current and future Milsatcom needs and requirements and what industry is doing to support those needs.
Key government, military and industry decision makers involved in provisioning critical communications to America’s warfighters will find the AIAA ICSSC Colloquium to be an essential platform for the sharing and exchange of valuable informational.
Attendees will leave the AIAA ICSSC Colloquium with an increased appreciation for the complex technical, funding and applications issues related specifically to Milsatcom. They will understand the many ways in which industry and the DoD are working together to streamline bandwidth acquisition and provision of services to the warfighter on the front line, and take away solutions for improving public/private partnerships in the provision of critical military communications services.
