Journal Subscription Polices for AIAA Members

Society publishers are faced with a continuing issue when individuals join the organization, purchase journal subscriptions at the member rate, and then give those journals to their libraries. That practice has never been condoned—not by AIAA, and not by other professional societies. AIAA deliberately keeps member rates as low as possible so that they are a true member benefit. Libraries, on the other hand, pay higher rates because their subscriptions serve multiple users.

Obviously, the great majority of our members are legitimate users who subscribe for their own personal use—and we appreciate that. The policies below are to assure that all of our member subscribers understand and comply. It is our intent, through enforcement of the policies, to keep your AIAA member subscription rates at a reasonable level and to continue to provide you with this important benefit.

The AIAA policies are as follows:

  1. The covers of all issues mailed to members contain this statement: “Personal Copy for Individual Use. Library Use Prohibited.” This prohibition has no time limit.
  2. When they initially subscribe or renew their subscriptions, members will attest they will not share their personal journal subscriptions with their libraries. (The purpose of this is simply to reinforce their awareness of the policy.)
  3. Members must order their subscriptions (and renewals) directly from AIAA. They may not use subscription agencies for that purpose.

These policies are similar to those practiced by other society publishers. We regret any inconvenience, but we do want to be able to continue to provide you with the high-quality information that you need and want at a reasonable price. Any member thought to be in violation of these policies will be contacted so that the situation can be resolved.

Any questions regarding the above policies may be directed to Norma Brennan, Program Manager, Journals (normab@aiaa.org).
