Honored for Innovations and Service to the Global Space Community for Commercial Cargo July 14, 2016 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce that the Cygnus Program, Orbital ATK Space Systems Group, Dulles, Virginia, has won the 2016 AIAA Space Systems Award. Frank DeMauro, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Programs Division, Orbital ATK, will accept the award on behalf of the program at a 12:30 p.m. awards luncheon on Thursday, September 15, held in conjunction with the AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum and Exposition 2016, September 13–16 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California. The award honors the Cygnus Program’s “innovations and service to the global space community for delivering commercial cargo to the International Space Station. “AIAA congratulates Orbital ATK on the success of their Cygnus Program,” said Sandy Magnus, AIAA executive director. “The team has shown what is possible when hardworking, imaginative individuals collaborate to solve a pressing problem with great results – the continuing launch and delivery of important cargo and equipment to the International Space Station. We look forward to seeing how future versions of the program will continue to shape the future of aerospace.” “The hardworking and dedicated team behind the Cygnus Program is what allows Orbital ATK to produce reliable, innovative, and affordable products for our customers,” said Frank Culbertson, president of Orbital ATK’s Space Systems Group. “Thanks to their efforts, Cygnus has demonstrated success in cargo deliveries to the ISS and as the host to important scientific research. Development of the Cygnus Program began in March 2008, as part of NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Program. The vehicle’s primary purpose is cargo delivery to the International Space Station. The first Cygnus spacecraft launched in 2013, and the program has performed five resupply missions thus far, with five more missions scheduled. The Cygnus Program has been hailed as a “new, safe, reliable and affordable commercial space transportation system,” as well as for being a “key element in the future growth of our nation’s space program.” The AIAA Space Systems Award recognizes outstanding achievements in the architecture, analysis, design, and implementation of space systems. |
