January Dinner Meeting:

New Trends in Communication Satellites

New applications of communication satellites are expected to stimulate continued growth in both commercial and government markets. Ten years from now, more than four-fifths of commercial spacecraft will deliver either mobile telephony and data or broadband data exchange and multimedia services. Industry wide, by 2005 the value of all commercial GEO and non-GEO satellite systems in operation may total $50 billion. And if all the current broadband plans come to fruition, broadband systems would add another $30 billion in value. In fact, commercial communications satellites represent the international satellite industry’s fastest growing market. The implications of that for those of us in satellite manufacturing are truly exciting.

Stan Rosen is Director of Strategic Planning and Market Research for Hughes Space and Communications Company (HSC), the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial communications satellites. HSC is also a major provider of space systems, satellites, and payloads for national defense, science, and environmental applications. Rosen is responsible for HSC’s business vision, strategy development, and market analysis.

He has held management positions at various Hughes Electronics Corporation business units since joining in 1990. These include responsibility for HE’s aerospace defense systems planning and managing strategic planning for Hughes Defense Systems, now a part of Raytheon Corporation.

When Rosen retired from the military, he was Director of Long Range Planning, Space Systems Division, Air Force Systems Command. Formerly, he held scientific engineering, management, planning, and policy positions with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Air Force Systems and Space Commands, the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Special Projects, and the German Aerospace Research and Test Establishment. In addition, Rosen served on the staff of the Committee on Science and Astronautics, U.S. House of Representatives.

He is a former director of the National Space Society; an Associate Fellow and former Vice President for Public Policy at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); a former chairman of the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee; and a member of the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association. He has published more than 60 technical and policy-related papers and articles.

Rosen received his bachelor of science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master of science degree in systems management from the University of Southern California, and a doctor of engineering degree from the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Mr. Rosen will be speaking to the LA Section on the subject of new applications of communication satellites on January 19, 2000 at the TRW S Forum. Dinner will begin at 6:00 PM and will cost $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Those who wish to attend the presentation only may do so at a cost of $5 and should plan to arrive no later than 6:45 PM. Reservations should be made no later than January 17, 2000 by contacting Lisa Lint at 1-800-683-2422 or lisal@aiaa.org.
