Pre-College Outreach Call for Volunteers
The Los Angeles Section of AIAA is working to help provide a science enrichment program for children (grades 2 through 5) at the Windsor Hills Community Learning Center. The program will include monthly science experiments, geared towards cultivating the students’ overall interest in science while teaching the fundamental principles of aeronautics and astronautics.
Volunteers willing to help conduct a science experiment /demonstration are needed for the coming year. The experiments are currently scheduled for one Friday afternoon per month, for one hour between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Come share your knowledge and enthusiasm for science with these wonderful kids!
Aside from the science experiments, opportunities exist at the center to volunteer on a more regular basis, helping the children with homework and literacy skills.
The center is also interested in connecting individual children with mentors. Mentoring involves working one-on-one with a child, encouraging their progress through the school year, and perhaps beyond. Mentoring requires at least 4 hours of your time per month; at least one of those hours being spent at the school (anytime between 8:30 am and 6:30 PM).
If any of these opportunities appeal to you, please contact Annik Majamäki at (310) 812-5467, or by e-mail at Annik.majamaki@trw.com.
The director of the Windsor Hills Community Center, Ms. Lizl Peter, can be reached at (323) 299-8380.

The annual section awards have been announced and the LA Section has been honored with two third place awards, one for Membership and one for Young Professional Activity.
The Membership Award is presented for increasing the sections’ membership by planning and implementing effective new member recruitment and retention campaigns. The LA Section Membership Activities, led by Vice-Chair, Jennifer Christopher, were recognized with the Third Place Award in the Very Large Category.
The Young Professional Activity Award is presented to sections that demonstrate excellence in planning and executing successful events which encourage the participation of young members in the AIAA and provide opportunities for leadership in the sectional, regional, and national levels. This year, the LA Section Young Professional Activities organized by Annamarie Ellington placed third.
Congratulations to both Jennifer and Annamarie. Also, special thanks to them for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
