AIAA New England Council Meeting

Raytheon Headquarters Building in Waltham, Massachusetts

7 June 2004

The meeting was called to order at 6:10 pm.  Attending were Pete Young, Chairman; Ray Erikson, Vice Chairman, Acting Secretary & Newsletter Editor; Bill Miller, Treasurer; Paul Schwartz, H&A Officer; Roy Walters, RAC Representative; Rick DeMeis and Ian Dargin, Chairmen Emeritus; Charlie Wilson of Lincoln Lab; Jeanne Hartley of SSG Precision Optronics; and Mario Miani.  Doug Joyce, recently recovered from his two broken shoulders, also made it!

Bill Miller paid our food service bill at Raytheon at the meeting, and reimbursed Ray Erikson $102.93 for newsletter printing costs.  He reported the account balance as $2400, with an additional $215 coming from Pay Pal that had not yet been transferred since the Honors and Awards Banquet.  Bill Miller and Charlie Wilson will prepare the Budget and Audit forms together.  The section liability insurance premium of $450 will be submitted as a deduction from our Category III reimbursement in November (Bill said he has been doing it that way for years).

Assuming we donate $200 to the Foundation for meeting space at the airshow, our budget through November now looks like:

On hand

$2615

Newsletters: May/Jun, Aug/Sep, Oct/Nov

$  600

Council meetings: June, Sep, Oct, Nov

$  225

Donation to Collings Foundation for Annual Meeting

$  200

Balance in November (Cat III funds arrive)

$1590

This can be improved substantially if we sell ads in the newsletter, so print the newsletter you received by email, post it someplace conspicuous, and ask the appropriate parties at your company or institution if they’d like to take out an ad!  Also inquire as to whom we should contact for corporate sponsor donations.

Pete Young and Ray Erikson will work on gathering corporate sponsorship.

Final status of Annual Meeting at Collings: Pete Young will bring grill, Ray Erikson will bring assorted burgers, chicken breasts and sausages.  Others are welcome to bring whatever beverages and covered dishes they like, as well as condiments, paper plates and napkins, flatware, etc.

Pete Young brought in the banner he had made.  Ray Erikson will make some poles to support it so we can avoid driving nails into the side of the hangar at Collings.

No nominees were suggested for the Sperry Award or for national awards.  The idea of using the newsletter to collect nominees over the course of the year was discussed.

Jeanne Hartley was nominated and approved for the position of Vice Chair.  With her addition, officer and other Council positions for the coming year are filled as follows:

Chairman: Ray Erikson

Vice Chairman: Jeanne Hartley

Treasurer: Charlie Wilson

Secretary: Pete Young and Rick DeMeis

Education: Ellen Holmes

Honors & Awards: Paul Schwartz

Newsletter Editor: Ray Erikson

Public Policy: Ray Erikson

RAC Representative: Roy Walters

Jeanne Hartley was offered the Regional Leadership Conference trip this year, since Ray Erikson cannot attend because he will be in North Carolina.  Jeanne cannot attend either because she also has another trip scheduled that weekend.

Ray Erikson will prepare the section’s Annual Report following the Annual Meeting.

The Master Plan for 2004-2005 was discussed.  Paul Schwartz suggested we move the Honors & Awards Banquet back to December and combine it with Wright Brothers Day.

Doug Joyce will be the program manager for our participation in the Daniel Webster Aviation Festival in September.

Ray Erikson will pursue an Aerospace Policy Forum (JFK Library?) for October.

Pete Young will coordinate an Engineer-Educator Social (Museum of Science? New director there very enthusiastic about such things) for November.

Paul Schwartz will run the Honors & Awards Banquet/Wright Brothers Day event in early December.  Chris Anderson, formerly with Scaled Composites, was suggested as a speaker.

The meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.
