· Mike Stein will submit Linda Fuhrman as the New England Section nominee for Engineer of the Year.
· The region has $3000 in Category III funds.
· Education outreach:
o The council noted that there is $500 budgeted this year and $900 in the scholarship fund collected to date by Ray Erikson. Spending some amount of this total is appropriate.
o Peter Young noted that the MIT Space Grant and perhaps the AIAA will work with MIT’s Jeff Hoffman and the Perkins School for the Blind to 1- augment their current science syllabus with AIAA inputs and 2- perhaps provide seed money for their planned trip to the Huntsville Space Camp. This is a good candidate for Category II application.
o The council voted $400 to the Cambridge Science Club in the hopes it will be reimbursed by Category II funding. Peter Young will submit the application.
o The council will consider supporting UMASS Lowell’s Summer Design Camps. - Gene Niemi will obtain more information. Winners of the $300 scholarships could be honored at the February H&A meeting.
· Caroline Lamb took possession of a large AIAA banner found by Peter Young.
· Gene Niemi will prod Todd Murray to help us evaluate the health of the BU student section because Todd has not attended any council meetings lately.
· Topics not discussed from previous meeting:
o Council discussed plans for public policy forum. MIT, WPI, DWC, Draper Lab, MITRE, Skyworks, Jentec, FLUENT and other organizations have expressed interest in supporting this event. Consensus was reached that AIAA New England should plan joint symposium with Boston Chapter of ASM. Mr. Stan Abkowitz, CEO of Dynamet, is already arranging this kind of event to take place at the Watertown Arsenal sometime in the fall, with sponsorship by 7th District Congressman Edward Markey. Mike Stein indicated he was fairly sure he could obtain participation by Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed.
§ Ray Erikson has action to coordinate efforts with ASM.
o The Council wants to support Young Professionals conference at Johns Hopkins in November.
§ Ray Erikson has action to determine how Region-I Director Tom Milnes wants us to support that event.
o Mike Stein has action to submit nomination of Honors & Awards Banquet for Outstanding Section Activity Award.
