Sailplanes - Paul Olsen

The Wright brothers started out as glider pilots in simple kite-like machines. In contrast, today's sailplanes are fiberglass and carbon fiber wonders that offer 50:1 glide performance, routinely fly thousands of kilometers and climb to 50,000 feet, all without power. Nevertheless, soaring remains for most people an unknown and misunderstood sport.

With a combination of aerial photographs and video, Paul Olsen will attempt to share the adventure and beauty of soaring, explaining the challenge and danger of silent engineless flight, from cross-country distance flying to sailplane racing. Paul has been flying sailplanes for 16 years, is a board member of the Low Country Soaring Association, and thoroughly enjoys the sport.
