AIAA ANNOUNCES SECTION AWARD RESULTS

Reston, VA, 17 September 2001- The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is proud to announce the 2000/2001 Section Award winners.

The Section Awards honor particularly notable performances made by a section of the Institute working as a unit, and are intended to formally underscore the AIAA conviction that intellectually stimulating section activity is fundamental to a healthy Institute.

All awards are bestowed annually in five section member categories (based on member size): Very Small - bottom 15.5% of the sections, Small - next 23%, Medium - next 23%, Large - next 23% and Very Large - top 15.5%. A cash award and certificate is presented to each of the winning sections: First Place $500; Second Place $200; and Third Place $100. The award period covered is 1 June 2000 – 31 May 2001.

The Outstanding Section Award is presented to sections judged on their overall activities and contributions throughout the year. The basis for this award is the Section Annual Report. The winners are:

Second Place - Savannah - Douglas R. McKissack, Section Chair
Third Place - Holloman/Alamogordo - Michael D. Hooser, Section Chair

The Career Enhancement Award is presented for section activities that are beneficial to career development, such as: Time Management Workshops, Career Transition Workshops, Career Benefits Workshops (health care reform, financial planning, pension portability, etc.), Technical v. Management Career Path Workshops, Resume Writing, etc. The winners are:

First Place - Savannah - Lloyd D. Morgan, Career Enhancement Officer

The Communications Award is presented to sections that have developed and implemented an outstanding communication outreach program during the section year. Winning criteria includes the following: level of difficulty and complexity as well as timeliness, multiple methods of communications, frequency, format and content of the communication outreach. The winners are:

The Membership Award is presented for increasing the sections’ membership by planning and implementing effective new member recruitment and retention campaigns. The winners are:

First Place - Savannah - Donald D. Freund, Membership Chair

The Precollege Outreach Award is presented to sections’ that have developed and implemented an outstanding precollege (K-12) outreach program that provided quality educational resources for the Nation's K-12 teachers in the areas of science, mathematics, and technology. The winners are:

Second Place - Delaware - Edward C. Painter, Precollege Chair

The Public Policy Award is presented to sections for stimulating public awareness of the needs and benefits of aerospace research and development, particularly on the part of government representatives, and for educating its members in the value of public policy activities. The winners are:

The Young Professional Activity Award is presented to sections that demonstrate excellence in planning and executing successful events which encourage the participation of young members in the AIAA and provide opportunities for leadership at the sectional, regional, and national levels.
