SAVANNAH AIAA SECTION PARTICIPATES IN THE DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR

The First Congressional District Science and Engineering Fair was held on 16 February 2001 in the new gymnasium at Armstrong Atlantic State University. The following Savannah AIAA members served as both general floor judges and special awards judges at the competition: Mike Foster, Doug McKissack, Don Freund and Pat Connor.


The Savannah AIAA Section sponsored 5 awards at the District Science Fair—2 awards at the junior level (7th and 8th grades) and 3 awards at the senior level (grades 9 through 12). Listed below are the winners and the project titles of the AIAA special awards. Two of the individuals listed below used the section’s mini wind tunnel to conduct their experimentation.


Junior Level
1st Place-$50-Jimmy Cule—The Shape of Things to Come
2nd Place-$25-Tyler Almand—Balloon Rockets


Senior Level
1st Place-$75-Curtis Switzer—How do Vortex Generators Affect the Aerodynamic of a Wing
2nd Place-$50-Stephen Claus & Thomas Powell—Do Honeycomb Bridges Hold More Weight than Aluminum Bridges
3rd Place-$25-Apryl Greco—Comparative Viscosities: Major Oil Brands at Various Temperatures


These awards were presented to the winners at the awards ceremony on 17 February by Section Chairman, Mike Foster.
