INSTRUCTORS NEEDED FOR AIAA MODEL BUILDING PROGRAM
26 September 2002

The Savannah AIAA Section will again be sponsoring a model building program for local area students. This year’s program will be open to both middle and high school students in the public school system. The students will be building several models of varying complexity. We expect to have about 10 or 11 classroom sessions where students learn about aviation-related items, build model airplanes and fly their completed models. The cost of all models will be fully covered
by the national AIAA organization as part of their Evolution of Flight Program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Wright brother’s first powered flight. The program will be open to 30 students selected on a lottery basis from all applications received.

To guide the students in building the models, we need to recruit some additional instructors. Currently we have a core of
4 instructors who participated in last year’s program, but we are hoping to enlist the assistance of about 4 or 5 other people who are willing to guide students in the construction of their models. No prior experience is required. Prior to the first class with students (currently scheduled for 23 Oct), a meeting will be scheduled for all interested instructors. At this meeting (to be held at lunch at Gulfstream), we’ll discuss how we want the students to construct their models and then pass out model kits to each instructor to put together prior to the first class with students.

Classes with students will be held at Derenne Middle School. The first class will be held on Wednesday, October 23.
Each class will begin at 6 PM and end about 8 PM. A total of 10 or 11 classroom sessions are currently planned.
Classes will meet every 2 weeks on Wednesday evenings. The final classroom session should be in late March or early April.

Those of us who participated in last year’s program really enjoyed the experience of working with local area students to kindle an interest in aviation with them. By having some extra help with this year’s program, the hope is that we won’t be stretched quite so thin, and we will have the luxury of not having to attend all sessions. This represents an excellent opportunity for folks to get involved in a very worthwhile program that will benefit local area students. If you are interested, please give me a call and I’ll add your name to the list of instructors and I’ll give you details on the planned instructor meeting.
