Minutes of Air Transportation Systems TC Meeting
5 March, 1996.
Ciao Baby Restaurant, Washington, DC.
Tony Hays, Chairman, convened the meeting after dinner.
Present were
Item No. 1 - Minutes of Previous Meeting
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Item No. 2 - New Members
New members Nora Lawson, of MITRE, and Dr. Dimitri Mavris, of Georgia Tech, were introduced and accepted as members of the TC by acclamation. Fred Macey, of Lockheed/Martin attended as a guest. The Chairman inquired about member Hassan Shahidi, requesting that he be urged to participate in committee activities.
Item No. 3 - AIAA HQ Move
Hays related that AIAA had moved its headquarters to Reston in February to achieve some cost savings, making it unfeasible to hold our meeting at AIAA offices as in the past.
Item No. 4 - Committee Reports
Joe Windisch, Awards Subcommittee Chair, reported that he has now rotated off of the Guggenheim award committee. He reported that the latest J. Hollingsworth Speas award drew 30 applications, with the winner being USAF Captain Matthew Kundrot, for his work in improving integration of military aircraft into civil airport environments.
AIAA has requested representatives of this TC on the Aircraft Operations award subcommittee. Joe Windisch and Joe Davis volunteered.
Joe Davis, Airline Membership Subcommittee Chair, reported no success in recruiting additional airline representation on the TC, committing to attempt to get some help from Bill Cotton of United Airlines at the next days meeting. Ray Ausrotas, Education Subcommittee Chair, indicated willingness to pursue the possibility of presenting a tutorial in conjunction with the upcoming World Aviation Congress in LA, however, no major ideas were offered by the TC membership.
Item No. 5 - Aerospace America Highlights
Tony Hays explained the circumstances of the non-appearance of the ATSTC's Highlights contribution in Aerospace America magazine. It was timely sent to AIAA via e-mail, but apparently not properly forwarded in-house, and no one at AIAA inquired about the missing material when the magazine was being composed.
The material is on the TCs Internet home page, and is highly recommended reading. The address is: http:// skipper2.mar.external.lmco.com/aiaa. Hays asked for volunteers to prepare the article for next year's issue, and Nora Lawson agreed to handle it. September is due date; Hays to provide details.
Item No. 6 - World Aviation Congress
The October World Aviation Congress was next discussed. This meeting, jointly organized by AIAA and SAE, will take place October 22-24 at the Sheraton Gateway, in Los Angeles. It was agreed that this TC will chair organize/chair four sessions:
Further work on organizing these sessions will be conducted by e-mail.
Item No. 7 - ATSTC Homepage
Tony requested that all TC members who have not done so forward to him their current resume and photo for inclusion on the home page of the TC. He advised, also, that the AIAA will establish its "official" home page soon. There was discussion of the next day's Free Flight work shop, chaired by George Swetnam. Arrangements were complete with forty or so attendees expected. (In reality, about twice this number attended this very well planned symposium.)
Item No. 8 - Other Matters
Nora Lawson appealed for volunteers to chair two Free Flight sessions at the Fall Digital Avionics Systems conference; please advise Nora, if interested.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:35 PM.
