Minutes of Air Transportation Systems TC Meeting
1 May, 1996.
Hyatt Regency, Crystal City.
Present at the meeting were:
Secretary pro tem: Nora Lawson
Jerry Hefner (NASA Langley) is a member of the AIAA Board of Directors, and head of all technical committees. He dropped by to introduce himself and to offer his services to help resolve any needs of our committee.
Item No. 1 - Minutes of Previous Meeting
Joe Windisch read the minutes from the last meeting, which were accepted.
Item No. 2 - New Chairman
Chairmanship of the ATSTC passed to Joe Windisch. (Because of travel/budget restrictions at Lockheed, Tony Hays was unable to attend this meeting.)
Item No. 3 - New Members
Nora Lawson mentioned that she and Joe Davis talked to Bill Cotton of United to solicit an airline team member for the committee. Cotton was receptive to the idea, and would look for someone from United to participate. Nora suggested Bill Flathers, who is not only a United pilot and AOPA member, but also involved in NAS concept development--Cotton thought he’d be a good choice. [Since that time, I spoke with Bill Flathers; Cotton had not mentioned this possibility, so Flathers was going to bring it up with him.]
Item No. 3 - TC Meeting Place
Since AIAA has moved their headquarters to Reston, that is not as convenient as their previous location. With this in mind Nora volunteered to reserve a MITRE conference room (McLean, VA.) for any future committee meetings. She can also get government hotel rates locally at two very good local hotels: Hilton and Embassy Suites. At this time, no meeting has been set; however, Joe proposed a mid-term ATSTC meeting in the fall. Please let him know of your availability for this.
Item No. 4 - Aerospace America Highlights
The annual article for the annual publication of Aerospace America is due in September. Joe Windisch will help Nora write this article.
Item No. 5 - Thanks for Free Flight Workshop
The Free Flight workshop in March was very successful. Thanks go to George Swetnam for his efforts to bring that about.
Item No. 6 - 1997 ATSTC Workshop
Next year’s AIAA conference will be held at the Embassy Suites (22nd and M Streets, D.C.), where ATRIF will also be held.
Discussion was held on candidate topics for next year’s workshop (to coincide with ATRIF/FAA Forecasting Conference). Possibilities include:
Please recommend any other topic you think would be of general interest, or state your preference from the two above topics to Joe Windisch. Once a topic is selected, Joe would like two or three volunteers to arrange and chair the workshop.
Item No. 7 - Digital Avionics Conference
The Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC) will be held October 27 - 31 in Atlanta, Georgia. This conference has high user participation. There will be two sessions on Free Flight at this conference, chaired by Jim Dieudonne and Nora Lawson.
