Minutes of Air Transportation Systems TC Meeting

Wednesday, 7 May 1997.

Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia.

The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm by Tony Hays, substituting for Joe Windisch, who was unable to attend due to a last minute illness.

Present at the meeting were :

Special Item - Aviation Safety Conference/Workshop

The first order of business, courtesy of Hal Kohn, was Hal's proposed Aviation Safety Conference/Workshop. Hal stated that he had proposed this workshop to the Aircraft Operations TC, which was in favor.Discussion proceeded as to how long the workshop should be, when it would take place, what its theme (or content) was to be, and who would (TC one or two) ultimately be responsible for pulling it all together. The consensus after an hour or so of somewhat spirited conversation was that the conference/workshop would:

  1. be centered on the economics of aviation safety (in the future?)
  2. should have representation from the usual alphabet soup of aviation acronyms (ATA,ALPA,NASA,FAA,GAMA,AOPA, NTSB, and so on..)
  3. take no more than one day
  4. be held, as usual, in conjunction with FAA Forecasting/ATRIF in March ?,98
  5. and that Hal would further define the concept and e-mail his thoughts to the TC members and would be responsible for shepherding the project along.

The meeting then proceeded to Joe's original agenda.

Items Nos. 1 & 2 - Membership Status and Recruitment.

(Nora promised to join immediately.) All TC members were asked to recruit at least one additional member for the TC. Tony will ask Emily Davis to mail to each TC member appropriate forms for TC membership. Joe Windisch will also be asked to e-mail all current members to remind them that they should attend at least 2/3 of the TC meetings if they desire to remain on the committee. (It was noted that one of the forms for joining the TC asked the "boss" of the new member to commit themselves to allow the TC member to attend TC meetings - and whether this should be brought up if members were refused to go.)

Item No. 3 - Vice-Chair Designation.

Nora nominated Ray to be be Vice-Chair. It was noted that this required a full committee vote, and Joe will be asked to e-mail TC members this nomination for a vote, or submissions of additional nominations.

Items No. 4 & 7 -  Next Year's Workshop & Aviation Safety Conference.

(See above.)

Item No. 5 - Aerospace America Article.

Joe Windisch, having done a great job in last year's AA, was nominated by acclamation to do it again. Tony and Ray will help.

Item No. 6 - Fall TC Meeting.

It was tentatively decided that the meeting will be held in conjunction with the World Aviation Congress in Anaheim ,CA during October 13-16, so that AIAA can arrange for meeting rooms and refreshments/food.

Item No. 8 - Communication.

According to members present in Crystal City, aside from meeting in person (preferred), e-mail works just fine for information transmittal.

Item No. 9 - Bio's and Photos.

This met limited response. Tony requested that photos and bio sketches be sent to him and that he would update our TC homepage.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00pm, on schedule.

Respectfully submitted,

Ray Ausrotas
