3 December, 1998
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM
Participants were:
David Brandt went over some factors bearing on the cost of the meeting and
estimated that the fee per attendee will be in the neighborhood of $50,
including lunch. The members concurred that this is a very reasonable
figure. The Washington Embassy Suites hotel is the likely venue for this
meeting, as well as ATRIF's meeting on the following day.
David expected to produce a budget early by mid-December.
Promotion of the event was discussed, with various possibilities being the
Av. Week calendar of events, the ATRIF mailings, and FAA publicity in
connection with their forecast meeting.
The group discussed the format of the meeting and there was consensus that
the past "workshop" format, rather than more formal speechifying is the
best approach.
Attention then turned to the details of the agenda for the meeting and the
possible speakers who might be participants. The topic of the all-day
meeting is "Commercial and Military Air Transportation: Meeting the
Challenges Together". The segments, and those ATS members to seek speakers
for them are as follows:
The March 22 Washington meeting was the primary topic of discussion.
| Safety | Hays/Creighton (Military) Davis (Commercial) |
| Maintenance/Aging Aircraft | Creighton (Military) Davis (Commercial) |
| Cargo Handling/Tracking | (Not clear who's got this one. UPS was mentioned as one possible source of an expert. JTD) |
| Environmental Issues | Windisch |
| Air Traffic Mgt./Future Flight Decks | Creighton (Military) ??? (Commercial) (Mary Murphy, MITRE?) |
| Lean Aircraft Initiative | Hays |
| Design for Dual Use | Hays (Steve Justice/MD-17) |
| Vision for the Future | Hays (Airbus Industry?) |
All were urged to make contacts with potential speakers as quickly as possible, in order to allow time for adequate publicity, publication of speaker bios on website, etc.
There was discussion of the Spring TC meeting to be held in conjunction with the workshop and consensus is that another dinner meeting at Blackies, across the street from the Embassy Suites, would be optimum. David Brandt will coordinate this.
Future AIAA meetings in Reno and the WAC 1999 were mentioned. Tony Hays appealed for some member(s) to chair a WAC session - four or so papers on a pertinent topic. The deadline for papers is Jan. 15. One or two members indicated some interest, but no firm commitment was made.
Tony Hays reported that the TC on Aircraft Operations had distributed a flyer soliciting membership applications and got about 60 responses, including some AIAA members with excellent Air Transportation Systems backgrounds. Tony committed to send out an invitation to these people to check out our TC website and consider membership in this TC.
The teleconference concluded with Ray Ausrotas' thanks to all who participated.
Respectfully submitted,
Joe Davis
