Design Guide Subcommittee SDM Meeting Notes for April 22, 1998
In attendance: Bruno Lohmueller, Bob Dauwalter, John Calderone, Ray Prouty (guest)
Status:
| The guide will be published in September 1998. | |
| The first proofs of the following sections have been reviewed by the Subcommittee and returned to AIAA: 1, 2, 4, 7, and 9. | |
| The first proofs of the following sections are still in Subcommittee review: 3 | |
| The following sections are still in composition: front matter, 5, 8, and 10. | |
| The following sections are still in manuscript form: 6. | |
| The following sections are still missing figures: 6, 8, and 10. | |
| Permission letters have been written so that we may use material from 39 different books; permission has been granted for 4 of those books. |
Proof Reviews:
| Reviewed marked up changes for Sections 4 and 7. | |
| Reviewed helicopter material with Ray Prouty. (Some figures replaced or revised.) |
Formatting Issues:
| The book will not be spiral-bound, as in the third edition. Cover will be paperback "lie-flat" binding that will lie smooth on a tabletop. (This change from the spiral binding will enable AIAA to sell the guide to libraries and bookstores, which increases visibility and opens the book to possible adoption as a college textbook.) | |
| A glossary of abbreviations for units of measure will be added to the front inside cover. | |
| The text will be positioned so that it is centered on the page (not justified to the right/left to accommodate the spiral binding). | |
| Running heads on the even-numbered pages will be changed from the title of the guide to the title of the section. | |
| Running subheads will be added to each page, identifying the title of the subsection for each item in the guide. | |
| Black "boxes" will be added to the outer edges of each page so that the sections of the guide will be demarcated by "tabs" on the loose side of the book. | |
| Grids will be added to various graphs throughout the book to assist readers in making more accurate measurements. | |
| The equations will be spaced more closely together to help eliminate some white space. | |
| Page breaks will be inserted in various places so that subsections are more self-contained and more unified. | |
| Most figures will be enlarged or cleaned up so that they are more readable and usable. |
Action Items:
| Bob will draw gridlines on those graphs that will benefit from having grids. (The number will be limited to avoid excessive typesetting costs.) | |
| Equations for y will be calculated for the beam formulas in Section 4 (i.e., "simple beam-distributed load over part of beam" and "beam supported at one end, fixed at other-concentrated load at any point). |
Items Not Addressed:
| Review process for the second proofs. | |
| The Agrawal figures from section 10 (on pages 10-3 and 10-61). (Will these figures be used in or deleted from the fourth edition?) |
Items to Discuss/Consider:
| Adding SI conversion tables to the front inside cover of the guide. (Letters asking for a decision on which conversions to add will be sent on Monday, April 27.) | |
| Completing a questionnaire to assist the AIAA marketing team in writing promotional and catalog copy. (The questionnaire will be sent on Monday, April 27, in the package containing the information about the conversion tables.) |
