Minutes of the AIAA Design Integration Subcommittee (DISC)

39th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC SDM Conference; Long Beach, CA
22-23 April 1998

AIAA Design Engineering Technical Committee
Minutes of Design Integration Subcommittee (DISC)
Long Beach, CA, April 21-22, 1998

Subcommittee members and guests present during the meeting:

Jon Schuck USAAMCOM, Chairman
Mike Johnson Coleman Aerospace
Paul Trimarchi NASA (Lewis)
Marc Cohen NASA (Ames)
Michael Lichter NASA (Lewis) - New DETC Member/New DISC Member
Julian Blosiu JPL - New DETC Member/New DISC Member
William Berrios NASA (Langley) - New DETC Member
Francis Moon Kaman Aerospace - New DETC Member

Various new members visited with us during the meeting. Mr. Torey Davis, a panelist from the previous day's session, sat in for Tim Hintz. Torey's presence was a pleasure, and his active participation is very much appreciated.

Agenda:

Long Range Plan
Year End Aerospace America (AA) DETC Article
Articles for publication in AA

Long Range Plan:

Near term activities and milestones for the subcommittee were discussed and actions assigned. The submittal date for the AA Year End article is 1 September. Publication date is December.

The DISC will continue to pursue publication of Design Engineering oriented articles in the AA.

Sponsorship and chairing of panel sessions, primarily at the SDM conference, will continue.

The long range plan for the LRP subcommittee (Russ Reck), is attached.

AA Year End article:

Mike Johnson graciously volunteered to solicit, coordinate, write-up, and submit the committee's input. Late May is Mike's deadline to get the various inputs from the committee. Jon agreed to give Mike the necessary AIAA (Elain Camhi) contact information ASAP.

AA article(s):

Tim Hintz (in abstentia) volunteered to corral authors, get date(s), and coordinate with AA publications. A couple of potential articles discussed were:

"Design Integration Using a Parametric Approach" (Julian Blosiu)
"Integrated Helicopter Design Tools" (Jon)

Most of the planning and discussion assumed that a single, multi-article edition of AA focusing on the Design Engineer or the Engineering Process would be our goal. (In the follow-up general session, AA's new approach of publishing a series of single articles was reiterated.)

Panel session for '99 SDM:

DISC will request the sponsorship of a DE panel session at next year's SDM. Mike Johnson volunteered to chair this session. We discussed what an appropriate topic should be. Some suggestions are:

"Capturing the Knowledge of a Design Engineer"
"What is the Product of the Design Engineer"

Ultimately, the topic will be up to Mike.

Action Items:

  Date Assignment
Contact Elaine Camhi, AA Publications, about date or dates for AA Articles ASAP Jon, Tim
Nail down publication dates for AA articles, get authors TBD Tim
Get topics for the AA Year End Article (late May), and prepare article* 1 Sep 98 Mike
Encourage or write technical papers for SDM '99 (Abstracts) 3 Aug 98 All DETC
Choose Panel Session topic for SDM '99 ASAP Mike
Chair Panel Session for SDM '99 Apr 99** Mike
Solicit panel session sponsorship for SDM '99 (Ed White) Oct 98 Jon

* Make mention of winner of Design Engineering Award in Year End article.
** Notification of speakers name and session title to SDM planning in early '99.

Wrap-up:

The DISC meeting was adjourned at 11:30 am. Our next meeting will be at the World Aerospace Conference, 28-30 September 1998.

During the ensuing general session, the DETC was again reminded to provide Mike Johnson with a 'topic sentence' to help him prepare the year-end article. The sentence should express a milestone, event, or accomplishment in the Design Engineering community from the previous year (1998), and its significance. Mike will get back to individuals to get more details.

Two new DETC members were assigned, at their request, to the DISC. We welcome Michael Lichter of NASA at Langley and Julian Blosiu of the JPL to our subcommittee. Based on the DETC action on the new Space Architecture subcommittee, it looks like we'll eventually be losing Marc Cohen.

It's a busy, active schedule we've laid out. Let's all keep in better touch.

Respectfully submitted,

Jon Schuck, Chair
