Principal Intent: The Aerospace Design Engineering Award is established to recognize Design Engineers who have made outstanding technical, educational or creative achievements that exemplify the quality and elements of the engineering design process.

AIAA Membership: AIAA membership required unless strong overriding conditions exist.
Citizenship: Desired, but not required.
Age: Living (no age restriction).
Previous Awards: No previous national AIAA award for the same accomplishment.
Dates of accomplishment: Contemporary.
Management vs technical: Principally for technical projects. Management involvement is acceptable for outstanding advancement of the Design Engineering Process.
Practical application: Yes. A product or concept that has been reduced to practice by test or application.
Individual versus team: Both. Design Engineering can be a team process.
Other: Multiple recipients receive individual awards.
Selection group: Design Engineering Technical Committee(DETC).
Nomination schedule: Candidate nomination to DETC six months prior to presentation. Final selection three months prior to presentation.
Approvals required

	Technical Activities Committee Director under Structures Design and Test.
	Chairman of the Honors and Award Committee.

Where: AIAA Structures, Dynamics, & Materials Conference, Atlanta, Georgia - April 2000
By Whom: AIAA President, President-Elect, or a Vice President.
Trappings: Bronze, 2.50 inch diameter.
Display means: Ribbon and a case for table top display.
Certificate: Yes, with appropriate citation.
Publication: Aerospace America and as appropriate.
Other: Rosette pin, acknowledgement to recipient.
