Bob Simms talked about Space Conference Panel session (previously held each year in Huntsville, AL). DETC volunteered to host a panel session at this years conference and stated that our session will be held on September 29th from 1pm to 4 pm. The Panel Session is entitled: Design Approaches for New and Evolutionary Launch Vehicles and will consist of a 15min Overview by each speaker followed by a 90 minute Panel/Audience Discussion. Bob discussed that we need to firm up the panelists by 4/16 and agreed to provide an update for inclusion in the minutes. Subsequent to the meeting Bob provided the following information.

Bob Simms reviewed the status of our Design Engineering Award and remarked that we did not make a award this year due to lack of nominations. He also discussed that AIAA does not distribute nomination requests to Industry, Government, and Academia but rather relies on the TC's to get nominations. The strategy and approach for acquiring additional nominations is an ongoing action for the Awards subcommittee.
Tom Healy proposed a brochure format for the DETC. A suggestion was made for adding the Design, Build, and Fly Contest to the information on the brochure. DETC members should review this draft brochure and provide comments and suggestions to Tom Healy prior to our next meeting.
Design Engineering Survey: Doug Young gave a description of the survey to find out about "Fresh-out" knowledge and industry worker knowledge. Committee asked to read survey questions and give comments back to the Education Subcommittee tomorrow. These questions will then be given to us and we are asked to give to 5-10 engineers at our work.
Tim Hintz gave overview on SDM 2000 -- Atlanta, GA. SDM Theme: "Venture into the new Millennium -- Get out of the Box". Told to get Hotels early. Possible Topics for Panel -- Advanced Technology Demonstrators.
Discussed Future Special Presentations:
Do we want to continue? -- Comment to use common sense and do them as time permits.
Is there some other selection method needed? -- Comment that older members have good things to present. Bob Simms to the action to develop a presentation plan for upcoming meetings.
