Tuesday, 13 January 1998

Chairman Tom Healy called the meeting to order at 8:10 AM in Suite 153 of the Hilton, Reno NV. Tom started with status of Dale Calkinsí snow-in and presented him (in absentia) an AIAA plaque honoring him for service as DETC chair. We then appointed the Meeting Secretary (James Wu) and finalized the dinner plan (Tom did a great job selecting the restaurant).

Dr. Larry Pinson gave us a talk about (1) Aerospace America needs articles in the format of a series of articles instead of single Special Issue, (2) TAC in self review (3) DETC Web page "outstanding", discussed ways we can use it for TCís communication,(4) The coming Congressional Visit Day (see Enclosure 2). Wayne is our liasion to the CVD group.

Tom then went back to his meeting charts (see Enclosure 1), starting from the Chairmanís Corner. Passed the roster, the 1997 status report, the TC self evaluation comment (Encl.7 ) for members to review and comment. Tom also passed newsletters from other TCs and updated the subcommittee status and assignments.

Steve Bauman gave us a special presentation of NASA Lewis Research Center. Steve covered the history, facility, capabilities, Ö. (Almost everything you want to know about NASA Lewis but afraid to ask) Its going to be difficult to top his presentation for the future presenters.

Tom continued with Old Business. We approved the Oct. 1997 minutes. Bob talked about the Treasureís Report (see Enclosure 3). We had a good discussion of the DETC Web page. Russel talked about the SDM meeting (see enclosure 5). A preliminary agenda for the our next DETC meeting (April SDM) was discussed and agreed upon. The comments to Space Architecture SC charter (see Enclosure 6) need to be back to Marc by early February. We tooka break at 10:10 AM.

Ms. Emily Davies showed the AIAA video ìBuilding Americaî. She gave a copy to Tom. (It is a very high quality video. If you have not seen it yet, call Tom)

Mr. William W. Richard (562-593-7525, william.w.richard@boeing.com), Program Chair SAE, talked about the 28-30 September WAC, Anaheim Merriott. He solicited DETCís sponsorship for panel session(s). We selected WAC for our 3rd meeting for 1998.

Bob Simms lead the discussion of the 1998 Design Engineering Award. (Tom told me not to reveal the winner, you just have to come to Long Beach in April to find out.) A Nomination Process Form is included in Enclosure 12. A special presentation by the award winner is also scheduled for Tuesday morning @ SDM meeting.

After a lunch break, Tom opened the afternoon session at 2:08 PM with New Business discussion. The Subcommittee meetings started at 2:25 PM. Tom started his ìPhotographerî career by chasing each member to get a digital picture of them. (I really look much better than my digital image)

Wednesday, 14 January 1998

The Subcommittee meetings resumed in the morning. The Design Education SC attended the panel session on ìEngineering Education - Vision of the Futureî (J. McMasters, Chairman). Dr. Wayne Solomon wasone of the panel members.

The TC regrouped in Suite 153 at 10:30 AM for final reports and discussion. Please reference Enclosure 9, 10, 11, and 13 for details. We adjourned about noon.
