Minutes of the AIAA Design Education Subcommittee (DESC)

37th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting & Exhibit - Reno, Nevada
January 12 - 13, 1999

AIAA Design Engineering Technical Committee
Minutes of Design Education Subcommittee (DESC)
Reno, Nevada - January 12 - 13, 1999

Subcommittee members and guests present during the meeting:

Wayne Solomon University of Illinois
Doug Young Northrop Grumman

Doug Young met with Dennis Mclaughlin, Chair of the AIAA Academic Affairs Committee and attended the Reno 2000 planning meeting. The objectives were to establish formal contact with the Academic Affairs Committee and to insert our Design for Cost Call for papers (Nice job Frank Moon!) into the Reno 2000 conference by way of a jointly sponsored paper session. As it turned out the call for papers for that conference has already been published so we solicited Dennis and John McMasters, the other education session chair at the conference, to accept our call as an informal subject for solicitation of papers. They were both receptive given that the turnout for papers has been weak to date.

Action: Education Subcommittee members to solicit authors from academia for the attached call for papers. Submittal deadline to AIAA is May 14th, 1999.

Greg Page briefed DETC on the Cessna - ONR design competition (See general minutes). This provided us an opportunity to link ourselves to the Student Affairs Committee and influence the design rules for the competition.

Action: Doug Young to work with Greg to review design rules for Cost and other current, relevant content that would reflect the views of the DETC.

Steve Bauman submitted a draft of our planned survey in abstention, thanks Steve for your work on generating the first cut for our survey. Committee conversations on this subject focused on the suggested audience, tailoring or focusing the survey and obtaining other engineering education oriented surveys that had been done in the past.

Actions: Wayne Soloman - work on getting a copy of an "engineering priorities" survey that MacDac apparently did recently. Doug - call Dale Caulkins re a similar survey some of the committee members remember him being involved in. Doug and Steve- focus survey on middle level engineering managers and leads (responsibility for 5-100 engineers doing applied engineering) in Industry and Government. Steve (lead, subcommittee supported) - prepare presentation of survey and implementation plan for DETC meeting at SDM conference in April. (This is to get informal buy in from overall DETC and to solicit final inputs from the general group)

Finally, membership for the Subcommittee is waning, particularly from the academic sector. All subcommittee members are urged to solicit new members. Wayne took on the task to bring some new academic members to SDM.
