AIAA Structural Dynamics Technical
Committee

The Structural Dynamics Technical Committee is one of sixty-five technical
committees that develop and administer the national technical programs of the
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Through the Technical
Activities Committee (TAC), its Technical Groups and its Technical Committees,
the AIAA conducts over twenty technical conferences each year. Other important
roles of the AIAA include the support of short courses, scholarships, standards,
technical assessments and policy papers.
The Structural Dynamics Technical Committee (SDTC) is organized under the
AIAA Structures, Design and Test Technical Group. The Technical Group's
Deputy Director for Materials and Structures oversees the activities of the
Structural Dynamics Techncial Committee.
The technical area addressed by the Structural Dynamics Technical Committee is
the interactions among aerodynamic, dynamic, elastic, damping, inertial and control
forces acting on vehicles and structures. Included are response and stability
investigations of linear and nonlinear systems using analytical, empirical and
experimental techniques.
The Structural Dynamics Technical Committee, through its various subcommittees,
participates in organization and planning of national technical conferences and
conference sessions, development of education and training aids, information
gathering, assessment and distribution, promotion of cross-disciplinary activities,
and promotion of candidates for awards and recognition in the structural dynamics
field.

How to Contact the AIAA Structural Dynamics TC
Many TC members are accessible by electronic mail. Please review the list of
current members or the subcommittee descriptions to find an address for the
committee member or subcommittee chairperson you wish to contact.
You can also contact Dr. Michael L. Tinker ,
our committee chair, directly. For information or
assistance regarding this site, please contact our WebWriter.

The Structural Dynamics Technical Committee operates through its various
subcommittees, which draw on the talents and efforts of the entire TC membership
to perform their duties and fulfill their responsibilities. Presently, the Structural
Dynamics TC has seven subcommittees responsible for nominating and electing
award recipients, organizing technical conferences and conference sessions,
developing educational programs including short courses and student outreach
programs, coordinating activities with other AIAA TCs, publishing technical
materials, maintaining TC membership and meeting information, and providing
information on structural dynamics technologies.
Functions and responsibilities of the Structural Dynamics TC subcommittees are
listed below.
- Awards: The Structural Dynamics TC seeks to identify and promote
outstanding structural dynamicists for influential awards, positions and
recognition. This subcommittee nominates and evaluates candidates for the
AIAA Structural Dynamics and Materials Award, the Jefferson Goblet
student competition, and promotions to AIAA Associate Fellowship and
Fellowship positions.
Contact Dr. Peretz P. Friedmann, Awards Subcommittee Chair, for more
information.
- Conferences: The Structural Dynamics TC helps to support, organize and
staff several technical conferences each year. These include the annual
Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, the biannual
Dynamics Specialists Conference, and the Adaptive Structures Forum. The
TC also organizes structural dynamics sessions (and possibly panel
discussions) at the Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference and the
Aerospace Sciences Meeting.
Contact Paul Taylor, Conferences Subcommittee Chair, for more
information.
- Education: Educational activities in which the TC participates include
sponsoring short courses on structural dynamics technologies, assembling
and distributing Science Fair Booklets, compiling audio-visual materials on
structural dynamics, and establishing a student outreach program. The goal
of these activities is to enrich the technical community's understanding of
structural dynamics and promote understanding of its importance in
aerospace systems.
Contact Susan Janssen, Education Subcommittee Chair, for more
information.
- Liaison: This subcommittee establishes and maintains contacts and
exchanges information with other AIAA TCs as appropriate. Members of
this subcommittee participate regularly in other TC meetings as practical.
Contact Bruce D. Willis, Liaison Subcommittee Chair, for more information or
to offer information on your TC's activities related to structural dynamics.
- Publications: Each year, the Structural Dynamics TC prepares and submits
a one-page Structural Dynamics Highlights article for publication in
Aerospace America. TC members are solicited to contribute to this article,
which seeks to provide a broad perspective on recent advances in the
aerospace structural dynamics field. Here are the 2002 and
2001 articles.
Other activities of this subcommittee
include promoting structural dynamics publications and maintaining TC
orientation materials.
Contact Dr. Donald Edberg, Publications Subcommittee Chair, for more information.
- Secretariat: The TC Secretariat prepares and distributes meeting
notifications and minutes, maintains a current membership and photo roster,
and prepares the TC Annual Report.
Contact Teresa Kinney, Secretariat Subcommittee Chair, for more information
and to correct official membership roster information. Requests for changes
or updates to our Web-based roster should be forwarded directly to our
webmaster.
- Technology Assessment and Transfer: This
subcommittee assesses the state of the art in aerospace structural dynamics
and identifies directions for continuing development and application of
structural dynamics technologies. Technologies that are ready for new
application are promoted for transfer to practice through the Structural
Dynamics Technologies Reference maintained by this subcommittee.
Contact Hyoung-Man Kim, Technology Assessment and Transfer
Subcommittee Chair, for more information.
