FAA Commercial Space Transportation Conference 2012

AIAA Streams Sessions from the 15th Annual FAA Commercial Space Transportation Conference

The FAA Commercial Space Transportation Conference took place 15-16 February, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, DC. Keynote speakers included The Honorable Robert McDonnell, Virginia Governor, Dr. William Gerstenmaier, Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations for NASA, and Dr. George Nield, Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the FAA. In his remarks, Governor McDonnell said the state of Virginia is committed to the development of the commercial space industry, and that he is working on legislation with the Virginia State Assembly to ensure that support. In addition, he said the state of Virginia has put measures in place to ensure a highly trained workforce, in support of commercial space initiatives.

Dr. Gerstenmaier's remarks centered on "Spaceflight in Transition," in which he maintained that "commercial spaceflight is our future for accessing Low Earth Orbit and the International Space Station." Dr. Gerstenmaier went on to say, "Optimism, cooperation, curiosity, ingenuity, integrity, and courage are critical to the success of future exploration."
