Bloomberg News reports that Malaysia Airlines “has become the first airline to sign an agreement for space-based flight tracking of its aircraft,” reaching a deal with Aireon, SITAONAIR and FlightAware for monitoring everywhere on Earth. Malaysia Airlines COO Izham Ismail said, “Real-time global aircraft tracking has long been a goal of the aviation community. ... We are proud to be the first airline to adopt this solution.” Aireon is working with Iridium Communications to launch a new satellite network, expected to be completed by next year, to monitor air traffic through ADS-B transmissions.
