The AP reports that NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, famous for exploring Pluto, “has spotted its next target on the outskirts of our solar system.” New images taken by the spacecraft show a “tiny icy world known as Ultima Thule,” which New Horizons is scheduled to pass by New Year’s Day in “humanity’s most distant exploration of a celestial body, 4 billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) from Earth and 1 billion miles (1.6 billion kilometers) beyond Pluto.” New Horizons detected Ultima Thule from a distance of 100 million miles.
