The U.S. Missile Defense Agency successfully conducted an exercise early Tuesday in the western Pacific in which a Navy destroyer tracked and shot down an overhead ballistic missile using a Standard Missile-3. Additionally, the 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment was able to shoot down an incoming missile in a live-fire test near the Marshall Islands. The results are considered a success for the Navy’s Aegis ballistic-missile defense system, which is becoming the future of the destroyer fleet, and the Army’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, in demonstrating layered tracking and intercept capabilities against ballistic targets.
