The FAA is considering granting exemptions to seven movie and television filming companies to allow them to use UAVs for their work if they can demonstrate their use won’t harm safety, and would be in the public interest. There is currently a lot of pressure on the FAA to allow more commercial uses of UAVs even as it works on the rules to allow them into the national airspace. Furthermore, despite the current ban on their commercial use, UAVs are being used to film motion pictures like the recent movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Despite the statement from the FAA, there is currently no “firm schedule” on when the permission will be granted, if at all.
