Defense News reported that to the disappointment of attendees, program supporters, and partnered militaries, the F-35 will not be flying at the Farnborough Airshow. Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said that when it came to clearing the jet to appear at the show following the end of the grounding that was caused by an engine fire, “nobody in senior leadership wanted to rush to do this for the sake of the air show.” Kirby added, “We haven’t seen anything that points to a systemic issue across the fleet, with respect to the engine.” Because the F-35 is the only advanced, fifth-generation fighter available, the U.S. and its allies may in the end have no choice but to back it.
