William T. Piper, Sr. General Aviation Systems Graduate Award

Through its annual graduate scholarship program, the AIAA Foundation presents awards to graduate students doing excellent research in the air and space sciences. This scholarship was sponsored by the AIAA General Aviation Systems Technical Committee in honor of William T. Piper Sr (1881-1970), who founded Piper Aircraft Corporation. Official recognition and presentation of the check to the recipient will be made in conjunction with the Awards Presentation Ceremony at the AIAA AVIATION Forum. In addition, the AIAA Foundation will present the recipient with a special recognition plaque in honor of this award. Basic Criteria and other information can be found at <a href= >;

  • Notes: Vlad Popescu received his Engineering Degree (2009) with a concentration in Applied Mathematics from the Ecole Polytechnique, France, after attending preparatory courses at the Lycee Louis le Grand in Paris (2004-2006). He is currently pursuing a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. His professional experiences include the French aerospace research center Onera (2009) and the European public-private entity SESAR Joint Undertaking, responsible for air traffic infrastructure development (2010). He is interested in applying controls, dynamical systems, and game theory to air transportation
