Plasma Aerodynamics: Current Status and Future Directions

Plasma Aerodynamics Discussion Group AIAA Plasmadynamics and Lasers Technical Committee

    June 2014

    1. Introduction Although plasma aerodynamics has a history that dates to the beginning of the space age, a surge of activity has occurred in the field since the mid-‐1990s. There has been strong research interest in plasma-‐based flow and flight control, plasma-‐assisted combustion, on-‐board electrical power generation, and magnetohydrodynamic heat shields. As the field has matured, some of the older concepts are receiving less attention, and emphasis is being placed on different areas like small-‐scale plasma actuators. The present white paper summarizes the current status of the field, and identifies promising directions for scientific research and technology development.
