Two decades of continuous presence at and on Mars have revolutionized our understanding of our neighboring rocky planet. From measurements made by instruments on board Mars Odyssey, Mars Global Surveyor, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Phoenix, and the Mars rovers we now know Mars once had abundant water on its surface, and that there is a significant amount of ice just beneath the surface in many locations. Planetary remote sensing allows us to project forward to the next decade of exploration in preparation for a future human mission to Mars.
