Government investment has historically driven aerospace industry research and development. The quantity and direction of future government-sponsored R&D may be affected by the current fiscal landscape and the increasing commercialization of aerospace technologies, together with changing export and intellectual property policies and changing national security objectives. These changes occur against the broader backdrop of commercial R&D gaining in impact relative to government-funded R&D, and of an increasing fraction of global R&D being conducted outside the United States. At AIAA SciTech 2014 we will hear directly from policymakers regarding their vision for government-funded aerospace R&D, and explore how changes in policy and the broader R&D landscape will affect the aerospace industry.
