|AIAA Foundation Announces Winners of its 2014–2015 Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition
September 9, 2015 – Reston, Va. – August 26, 2015 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its 2014–2015 Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition.
The contest required teams to submit a design for a next-generation, strategic airlift military transport aircraft.
The winning teams are:
- First prize: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, for its design “XC-30DART.” Team members: Jorge Corral, Kelechi Ezekwo, Shehan Kehanda, Matthew Pradjanata, Han Nguyen, Rachel Schultz, Eric To, Mark Torstenbo and Justin Wood. Don Edberg, faculty advisor. The team received a $500 award from the AIAA Foundation.
- Second prize: Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, for its design “The WHALE.” Team members: D. O. Berckmoes, J. S. Fischer, M. W. Hayat, R. R. A. Hoefsloot, K. J. W. Kwakman, D. M. N. Milewski, N. van Oene, F. H. A. van Tilborg and S. J. J. Zuurendonk. Ir. R. Vos, faculty advisor. The team received a $250 award from the AIAA Foundation.
- Third prize (tie): California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, California, for its design “Aether Aeronautics.” Team members: Brandon Barry, Eric Belfield, Devlin LeBlanc, Travis Perry, Jake St. Germain, Bryan Schmidt and Michael Spain. Aaron Drake and Rob McDonald, faculty advisors. The team received a $125 award from the AIAA Foundation.
- Third prize (tie): Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, for its design “Titan.” Team members: Daniel Bavaro, Christian Hoover, William Kelley, Brian Lozano, Ryan Mueller, Michael Nelson, Charles Russo and Garett Williams. Carl Johnson and Neil Weston, faculty advisors. The team received a $125 award from the AIAA Foundation.
“The Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition, originally created by AIAA’s Aircraft Design Technical Committee, is intended to be an opportunity for students to put their engineering education and skills to the test,” said Danielle Soban, a lecturer in aeronautical engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, and competition’s head judge. “Most universities use the competition as a focal point for their capstone engineering design course. The carefully selected topics are both relevant and challenging. By completing the competition, the students develop and hone their skills not only in engineering but also in teamwork, time management, requirements allocation and technical communication, all of which are vital to them being competitive in the engineering community. The competition also gives students a chance to explore new and risky ideas and technologies, and to further develop their creativity and ingenuity. The entries we received were, for the most part, truly excellent, and many contained a high level of innovation. We were also quite pleased with the increasing international dimension of the competition, with entries from universities around the world.”
