OVERVIEW

This is the third installment in a series of workshops designed to assess the current capabilities of 3D computational icing simulation tools and comparisons of ice shape results. The outcomes of previous IPW-1 and IPW-2 contributed to the formulation of IPW-3 with a significant focus on the verification and validation (V&V) of the computational workflows. Closely related to V&V is the establishment of methods and best practices for code-to-code and code-to-experiment ice shape comparisons, including the generation of quantitative methods for doing so.
IPW-3 will feature two distinct Technical Focus Groups (TFGs). The topic of TFG-1 is focused on the comparison of ice shape geometries derived from both codes and experiments. The topic of TFG-2 is a systematic verification and validation of computational tools. TFG-2 will utilize the outcomes of TFG-1 to enhance comparisons and evaluate comparator metrics.

OBJECTIVES

  • Bring together scientists and the user communities to share knowledge and information towards a common understanding of best practices for icing modeling and simulation.
  • Assess the current capabilities of 3D computational icing simulation tools through a systematic verification and validation workflow.
  • Establish and apply capabilities for comparison of ice shape results from code-to-code and code-to-experiment.
  • Define best practices for using computational icing simulation tools and comparison of ice shape results.
  • Identify areas that need additional research and development.
