The Zarem Graduate Student Awards have been established by AIAA and Dr. Abe Zarem as a means for students pursuing advanced degrees (master’s level candidates) in aeronautics and astronautics to showcase their talent and work. It is hoped that these awards will not only identify talented students, but also motivate/encourage more students to seek advanced degrees in these areas and thus start to fill a void that has worried educators for many years. PhD students are not eligible for this award.

Any masters student who would like to be considered for the award should submit their paper online via the AIAA Awards submission form. Additionally, U.S. masters students who enter their papers into the AIAA Student Conference Program in Regions I-VI and place in 2nd or 3rd in the masters category will have their papers automatically considered for this award. Awardees are notified in the summer following the closing of the program.

Student Winners receive the following benefits:

  • Astronautics winners will receive a funded trip to present their research at the upcoming International Astronautical Congress (IAC)
  • Aeronautics winners will receive a funded trip to present their research at the upcoming International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) every other year.
  • Both winners will receive a funded trip to accept their awards at the upcoming AIAA SciTech Forum and Exposition
  • A medal engraved with the winner’s name
  • A $500 award for the winner’s faculty advisor
  • A feature in AIAA publications

Meet Ken M. Mitchell, 2018 Award Recipient–Astronautics

Ken-Mitchell-200“I was born and raised in Memphis by two hearing impaired parents, learning English sign language as my first language, which I attribute to most of my intellectual growth. I knew I wanted to be a mechanical engineer right out of high school stemming from a childhood of tinkering with small engines and a variety of other mechanical equipment.”
