August 29, 2018 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its Space and Astronautics Forum (AIAA SPACE Forum) 17-19 September, at the Hyatt Regency Orlando in Orlando, Fla.
“Now is an extremely exciting time in astronautics with more companies and organizations than ever before dedicated to space exploration,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “The growth of private enterprise space efforts, development of new technologies, and progress with on-going programs, is built upon decades of work, led by true visionaries. AIAA SPACE Forum brings together the innovators and leaders who will guide our dynamic industry into the future.”

Some highlights include:
On Monday, 17 September, NASA Administrator James Bridenstine will give a keynote about NASA at 60. The conversation continues with a panel of former NASA administrators—the most on one stage in recent memory—for what is sure to be an insightful look at an agency that has transformed and expanded the world in which we live.
Michael Griffin, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, U.S. Department of Defense, will give the opening keynote Monday, 17 September, at the 22nd AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference, one of the 19 tracks taking place as part of the AIAA SPACE Forum.
On Tuesday, 18 September, GPS pioneer and Trimble Navigation founder Charles Trimble will give the first David W. Thompson Lecture in Space Commerce at the forum’s awards luncheon. A “fireside chat” follows during the Forum 360 session with Trimble, Thompson, and other experts discussing how GPS came to be the game changer it is today.
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Director Christopher J. Scolese will give the 2018 von Kármán Lecture in Astronautics on “Strategies for Technology Infusion and Risk Mitigation at NASA” at 6:30 p.m. (EDT), Tuesday, 18 September.
The always popular Astronaut Stories event will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday, 19 September. Some of the participating astronauts include Tony Antonelli, who served as pilot on STS-119 and STS-132; and Chris Ferguson, who served as pilot on STS-115 and commander of STS-126 and STS-135.
There also will be breakout sessions dedicated to hypersonics systems and technologies. Other key topics include new directions in space exploration. There will be three plenaries, nine Forum 360s, and nearly 100 technical sessions.
