AIAA Announces 2019 Region III Student Conference Winners Written 26 April 2019

April 26, 2019 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the 2019 Region III Student Conference winners.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) sponsors student conferences in each AIAA region for student members at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students present their research and are judged on technical content and clarity of communication by professional members from industry.

From 5 to 7 April, the 2019 Region III Student Conference was hosted by the AIAA Cleveland State University Student Branch, and there were 34 student members representing 12 universities within Region III. Students presented 14 research papers related to the field of aeronautics and astronautics over the three-day event.

In addition to the competition, the conference provides a venue for students to share AIAA experiences, participate in social activities, connect with industry professionals, and exchange ideas about current topics in aerospace engineering.

Since 2018, Lockheed Martin Corporation’s generous donation to the AIAA Foundation has supported the Regional Student Conferences and the International Student Conference. Funding was provided to the student conference in each region to organize the conference as well as provide prize money for the three categories supported by the AIAA Foundation.

Undergraduate Category

• 1st place – Active Flow Control in a Compact High-Speed Inlet/Diffuser Model, Collin O’Neill, Ohio State University
• 2nd place – Simulation and Dynamics of a Hexacopter after a Motor Failure, Karthik Srivatsan and Ella Atkins, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
• 3rd place – Wake Flow Structure of a Seal-Whisker-Inspired Low-Pressure Turbine Blade, Curtis A. Flack, Cleveland State University

Masters Category

• 1st place – Lagrangian Coherent Structures in Optimal Vortex Ring Formation, Braxton N. Harter and James W. Gregory, Ohio State University
• 2nd place – Design of an Experimental Facility for Characterization of Dynamic Stall, Nicole Whiting and Mo Samimy, Ohio State University
• 3rd place – Design of Heat Exchanger for Intense Cooling of Inlet Bleed Air at High Mach Numbers, Erin M. Tesny, Cleveland State University

Team Category

• 1st place – Specialized Terrestrial Rotorcraft Explorer, T. Hutchinson, N. Marquand, J. Springer, T. Swedes, S. Tandon, and J. Zyck, Purdue University
• 2nd place – Aerodynamic Feasibility Study on Highly Distributed Lift Configurations Continued, Michael P. Mongin, Andrew T. Truszkowski, Aaron Altman, University of Dayton
• 3rd place – Proof-of-Concept Student-Built Centrifugal Pump, Sophia Yu, Rishi Jashnani, Stephen Lisius, Collin Sageman, and Austin Wolfgram, University of Michigan
